“Confused Brilliance at Twilight” by David Flynn

I – The Way of Salvation

And spare us the intolerable piousness

of the pompous convert.

Bible black, confident and censuring sternly,

darkly godly, to kill your whisper.

Follow such prophets along a dismal path

to dubious heaven

and remind us of our shameful sins

as we stumble in darkness.

There’s something depressingly reassuring

about the reactions of the predictables.

The script is fixed, the templates ancient,

formula insight plumbs ‘neath cliché.

Pronounce loudly in absence of wisdom,

ignorance to confidence clash to integrate.

II – Walking Toward the Darkness

On this cheerless promenade

the tower clock chimes time –

everything stops for death.

The journey is over.
