“Pimiento” by Mary Elizabeth Parker

Pleasure on this gray day:
pizza with pimientos,

tiny red tongues moistening and
sweetening the bigger tongue.

Smell before snow: hemoglobin.
Smell before rain: dust.

Their ginger hound, Principessa Gemma,
their cat in a dog suit, by feline principle

points aggrieved toward the house
when rain starts

like the icicle tears
of chandeliers in an empty ballroom.

The day lifted its yellow skirts and fled
shortly after noon.
