“Blood Sports” by Nyree M Burt

Societies pariahs
craven jackals
Clustered around captured prey
Lazy bloated blowflies
feasting on the blood
of life's fallen corpses.
Exclaiming over
Paper pages or squared box
with horror and barely
hidden fascination
Death from a distance
Safe, yet titillating
Spicing up dull lives
Fed upon for difference
Then forgotten by the sports page
or some other calamitous comedic event
Or slowed down to view from safety
The carnage on the road
Hoping for a glimpse of blood
or body part separated from the corpse
mangled remains of an MVA
Just another specimen to brighten
an otherwise sterile boring day.
To awaken forgotten emotions
So they can 'feel' briefly things
They had forgotten
Under the minutiae of daily existing.
